Shift Happens

This video is about how our world is no longer “round”. Thanks to the Internet, our world is “flat”. China and India are two countries that are growing rapidly, and competing with us globally. In other words-our jobs are on the line. Now a day, many jobs we compete for can be out sourced by people in countries like China and India. It is happening frequently now as well.

“China has more honor students than we have students”, as quoted in my wordle. This means that there are more people capable of high quality work than people that we (U.S.) have to do the work. Other countries like China are advancing much faster than we are in education and job placement. They are willing to work for less pay as well. This is because the cost of living in countries such as China and India as well, is much less than that of the U.S.

This video made me question my career in the future. I have less of a chance of finding a job, due to more people who could be more qualified than I. Of course, they will be willing to work for a lower pay too. I could pursue a trade that would be avoidant of out sourcing to ensure a career. If my job can’t be out sourced, then my career is more assured.

TimeToast is an on line piece of webware that allows you to create time lines. You can create a time line of any thing you choose. It could be a historical time line, or one that you just made up.

A feature that impressed me was how you could insert a picture into your time line to give viewers a better view of your creation. This allows you to become more creative with your work.

Here is the time line that I made at timetoast.

I like this piece of webware, but i think music would make it even better. Inserting music would make a time line more unique. Adding music could even enhance the theme of every time line.

Here is a review that has been made by an unknown individual about timetoast.

Overall i think timetoast gets two thumbs up in my opinion. The ability to create your very own time line is pretty unique, I think this piece webware is useful for every one.

picnik.com
This piece of webware allows you to upload, edit, and recreate pictures that you choose. You can upload a picture of your choice, then customize it to your liking. The customization can range from tinting to deleting the “Red eye” effect that many animal pictures have. This website, picnik.com enables you to determine the effect of your own pictures at your own regard.

What impressed me the most about picnik was how you can customize any picture you wish. Other than just adjusting the contrast, or sharpening the image, you could even transform your picture into a night vision image. I have never done that to any of my pictures before.

I think that picnik could improve their webware by enabling you to create a unique background for a picture that you are editing. That could make certain pictures more comedic when desired. That would of course, give you even more freedom to do what you please with your picture.

Some devices of webware similar to picnik can be very expensive. Although picnik is free, other webware similar like Exposure 2, and Genuine Fractals 5 can range from $80.00 – 170.00.  It’s nice to have free webware!

Big corporate companies such as TIME Magazine have given great reviews saying how you can edit photos easily without knowing a thing about photo editing. With picnik, you can be an expert photo editor all on your own. Sounds like two thumbs up to me.

In these two pictures, I simply changed the original colors and switched up the contrast a little bit just to give it a special tweak.

Over the years, the Internet has evolved over time. When the Internet first started it was unamusing and practical. Now however, the Internet has more to offer and is more complex. I will discuss the differences of the “old” and “new” web in the following posts.

Web 1.0

This is time period – it spans from the beginning of the Internet around 1994. This ‘era’ goes all the way up to about 2004. So we’re looking at a time span of about 10 years of the Internet.

Characteristics of Web 1.0

This is the time when you could only read the web pages others made. You had to code (html) web pages if you wanted to make any web pages of your own.  This was very difficult. during this era we were only consumers – we could only read what others wrote . There was little activity on the web – you could not drag or drop things on web pages, you couldn’t leave comments, publish personal pages, etc. The software that was mainly used was stored on their computer hard drive. This was usually quit expensive, and you were usually tied down to your computer since the software was on your hard drive.

Web 2.0

This time period spans from about 2004 and is still going on. Also known as the second phase of the internet.

Characteristics of Web 2.0

This is a new ere of web use, we can still consume other information on the web, but now we can produce our own information. We can blog, leave comments, etc. Now we don’t need expensive software, Now we can use something called webware. These are progarms/applications that are usually free and you can use them on the web. Some examples of webware are GDocs, Splashup.com, and Animoto.com. You can find newer webware at a site called webware.com. Here you can find the top 100 webware. This new ere of the Internet about collaborating – working with others on projects such as web pages and other ideas for the web. You don’t even have to be in the same room as the people you are working with. A perfect example of collaboration is webware or google docs. Conversation is key in this new era, people sharing, publishing, and commenting ideas.View this montage created at One True Media
